Data Centre Power & Infrastructure Maintenance

KiwiData is currently carrying out electrical infrastructure upgrades at our data centre.
The original planned work was only to replace the main power switch, as the existing main switch would no longer switch off correctly and needed to be replaced.
As this required the mains power to be disconnected anyway, we made the decision to go further and replace the existing switchboard at the same time, rather than installing a new main switch into the older board.
During this work, we also identified that the existing incoming power supply and cable were below the standard we want for our data centre. We therefore made the decision to replace the incoming mains cable from our building through to the street connection.
While this has extended the original timeframe, it means we are addressing the electrical infrastructure properly rather than reconnecting equipment that we know will need replacing in the future.
The KiwiData data centre remains operational on generator power, and our servers and network continue to operate while we work to have mains power restored.
Daily Updates
Monday 26.10.2006
Mains power was disconnected at approximately 12:00 PM so our electrician could replace the faulty main switch.
The data centre was transferred to generator power before the work commenced.
Once work began, we made the decision to replace the existing switchboard rather than just replacing the main switch.
Tuesday 27.10.2006
Work continued on the new switchboard and associated electrical infrastructure.
During the work, the condition and standard of the existing incoming mains supply were reviewed. We decided that, while the power was already disconnected, this was the right time to replace the incoming cable to the street as well.
The data centre continued operating on generator power.
Wednesday 28.10.2006
Our electrical and civil work, including the new incoming cable, was completed by approximately 3:00 PM.
Our side was then ready for the power company to complete the final connection to the street supply.
The data centre remained operational on generator power.
Thursday 29.10.2006
We were awaiting the power company to complete the final mains connection.
The data centre continued operating on generator power while we followed up on the reconnection.
Friday 30.10.2006
We are still awaiting the final mains power reconnection.
Our data centre remains on generator power and continues to operate. We are actively working with the parties involved to get the new mains supply connected as soon as possible.
Current Service Status
KiwiData services remain operational.
Our generator system has been supporting the data centre throughout the work, and we are continuing to closely monitor fuel, generator operation, electrical systems and the data centre while we wait for mains power to be restored.
What began as the replacement of a faulty main switch has developed into a much more substantial upgrade of our electrical infrastructure. Although this has resulted in a longer period on generator power than originally planned, we believe completing this work now is the right decision for the long-term reliability and resilience of the KiwiData data centre.
We will continue adding daily updates here until the new mains power supply has been connected and normal utility power has been restored.
